Baxter Magolda's Self-Authorship Theory

Baxter Magolda's Self-Authorship theory involves three questions and four stages. The three questions that Baxter Magolda proposes are asked during the self-authorship process are:

1. How do I know?

2. Who am I?

3. How do I want to construct relationships with others?

Within these three questions, students go through four phases in the path to self-authorship:

1. Following formulas, going along with the plans laid out by others;

2. Crossroads, the crucial point where the student realizes they are not satisfied with the plan made by authority figures, and must seek their own. Baxter Magolda stated that career is one most common areas in which crossroads occurs;

3. Becoming the author of one's life, choosing one's beliefs and living accordingly;

4. Internal foundation, understanding one's self, beliefs, and relationships with others.
